Harbor District Community Celebrates Culture and Connection to the Water

This July, the Harbor District community came together to celebrate the stories and cultures that connect us to the water through two special events. 

On July 18th, community members joined a boat tour along the water, where they heard from two Indigenous storytellers who shared their personal connections to the water and the traditions passed down through generations. The gathering offered a meaningful look into two different Indigenous perspectives on the water that shapes the Harbor District.

The following week, on Friday, July 24th, the Harbor District hosted the debut of “Historias Junto Al Río” (“Stories by the River”), a free community storytelling series. Families gathered for an evening celebrating the stories and cultures that connect us to the water, enjoying snacks and paletas while sharing in stories from local artists, organizations and community members.

Together, these two events brought the community closer to the amazing body of water that is Lake Michigan. Together we honored the traditions, voices, and cultures tied to this shared resource.
